On last Tuesday, March 4, 10 black vultures were brought to the facilities of the Reintroduction Project of the Black Vulture, in the Pre-Pyrenees of Lleida.

These black vultures come from several points of the Iberian Peninsula. They were rehabilitated at different wildlife centres and afterwords given up to the project (wildlife centres from Extremadura, Andalucía, Región de Murcia, Comunitat Valenciana and Madrid) and picked up in Majadahonda, at GREFA’s centre.

All these vultures will remain at least for 6 months in acclimatization facilities in Lleida Pre-Pyrenees before being released: 3 animals in the Alinyà facility and 7 in the Boumort facility. During this time, they will be fed with the minimum of disruption or inconvinience (food is left in the facility), they will become used to their surroundings (they can see the natural place around them) and they could see as well other already free black vultures (that come to eat by the acclimatization facility). All that is very important in order to get them settled in the area once they will be free.

On the other hand, with regards to the 2014 breeding season, there are 7 formed pairs, 4 of them incubating at the moment.

The reintroduction project of the Black Vulture in the Pyrenees is promoted by the Departament d’Agricultura, Ramaderia, Pesca, Alimentació i Medi Natural de la Generalitat de Catalunya and by the Fundació Catalunya – La Pedrera. GREFA and Trenca are involved in the assisment and implementation of the Project, toghether with the staff of the Espai Natura Muntanya d’Alinyà and the rangers of the NHR of Boumort. The Estació Biològica del Pallars Jussà carries out several educational actions related to the project. REE is markedly engaged in financing the transmitters that allow us to radio track the black vultures from the project.
